Sarah Webster Fabio Center for Social Justice (SWFCenter) is a 501C3 located in East Oakland. Our Mission supports the needs of the traditionally underserved by providing opportunities for dialogue, art, social justice, and community building. Our programming has a transformational emphasis that counters  widespread anti-Black narratives to inspire future change agents to thrive! Our purpose is to  bridge the great cultural divide that limits the expression and opportunities for targeted communities that  live under extractive public policies supportive of notions of Black inferiority, or which appropriate our  cultural product, and then bleed into the very idea of whose expression deserves support.

Homelessness is much more complicated than people struggling with addiction and mental illness. In today’s environment, two-parent households working full-time minimum-wage jobs are often in a position where they can’t afford the basics, like housing. Our narrative about the housing crisis is out of step with today’s situation. SWFCenter embarked on a journey to tell a different story two years ago. The focus is on who faces housing insecurity and what we must do about it. SWFCenter launched A Rising Tide, this feature-length documentary, to update the topic and the public on the looming threat of unaffordable housing. We believe we can end this crisis.

“These families are generally job insecure, housing insecure, and are usually  unable to afford adequate health care. By robbing Peter to pay Paul, families  are left with too few resources to secure food.”

A Rising Tide sets us up to  spark action from legislators. With multiple poetic nods pushing us toward solutions,  SWFCenter places A Rising Tide in the public sphere through festivals, streaming venues,  schools, and community-based screenings to policymakers, legislators, budget determiners,  and neighbors—people who haven’t kept up with what is causing the continued growth in  housing insecurity.
